Nkana scored 5 goals in the second leg to record one of the most remarkable comebacks in the 2014 CAF Champions League as they overturned a 3 goal deficit to win the tie 5 – 4 on aggregate against Mbabane Swallows of Swaziland at Nkana Stadium on Saturday.
Zambia’s envoys in the competition lost 2 – 0 in Mbabane a week ago and looked like they were headed for the exit when Matanda Kudzanayi opened the scoring in the 6th minute, capitalising on a defensive error by Christopher Munthali.
However, Nkana remained composed and were rewarded when Ronald Kampamba pounced on a loose ball inside the box to equalise in the 19th minute after Swallows failed to defend a corner. Eight minutes later Kampamba was on the score sheet again after he scored from the penalty spot following a challenge on Claude Bwalya by Talent Maposa.
On the half hour mark Kampamba turned provider as he sent in a cross from the right by line for Simon Bwalya to head home at the far post for the home side to take a 3 – 1 lead at the break and keep the tie alive.
Kampamba and Bwalya’s partnership upfront paid off again in the 63rd minute when the latter slid in to direct the former’s cross into an empty net after the ball went past Jim Knowledge in goal for Swallows at near post.
There was panick from Nkana players when Wonder Nhleko completely unmarked fired in a long range thunderbolt to score the visitors second goal with only nineteen minutes remaining on the clock. Nhleko’s goal meant that Nkana would be eliminated on the away goals rule with the aggregate scoreline at 4-4.
However there was to be one more goal in favour of the home side when Jim failed to handle first time and the ball ricocheted in Bwalya’s path who smashed his effort into the roof of the net from inside the box.
Nkana will face Ugandan side Kampala City Council in the first round. The Ugandans defeated Sudanese outfit El- Merriekh 3 -2 on aggregate to book a date with Nkana.
