But then, EFF leader Julius Malema and Mantwa Matlala’s wedding that took place on Saturday was no ordinary affair.
Seshego township outside Polokwane in Limpopo had not seen a glittering wedding of this magnitude in ages – there were security guards everywhere and a guest list of more than 1,000, including some from Zimbabwe.
Politicians, business people and celebrities were among those who descended on Malema’s neighbourhood to see the former ANC Youth League leader tie the knot with his fiancée.
Sadly, guests would not tweet about the ceremony or take pictures of the couple because mobile phones were not allowed inside a marquee erected near Matlala’s house. Malema had his own photographer for the wedding.
Locals and journalists had been camping near a marquee since the early morning hoping to be allowed to attend the ceremony.
One of the locals, Mongi Matlala, said: “We understand that the wedding is by invitation only. We just hope they will allow us to attend the ceremony.”
