DISMISSED University of Zambia vice-chancellor professor Steven Simukanga says the gratuity and other benefits he received were his entitlement.
On Saturday, Prof Simukanga was fired, along with registrar Dr Kavwanga Yambayamba, librarian Dr Viatalicy Chifwepa and bursar Sampa Barbara Katoyo.
Their dismissal followed University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union (UNZALARU)’s demand for management to resign after allegations that they secretly paid themselves other benefits and gratuity against the institution’s conditions of service provisions.
But in an interview yesterday, Prof Simukanga said he did not pay himself and that the money he received was legally processed.
“I can’t pay myself, the accountant pays and my boss approves. My boss is chairperson of the banks and she is the one who approves; and there is no way I can start paying myself. So everything was legally done and that’s an entitlement,” he said.
Asked if the union’s call for him to resign was justified since he says his payment was legally processed, Prof Simukanga said this is what happens when people subject their superiors to lower levels.
