A little over a month ago, I was one among many to step out of the woods in praising President Edgar Lungu for his bold pronouncements during his maiden Press Conference at State House. The measures, typically, aimed at tightening our country’s deteriorating fiscal position were,on balance, billed as the first step towards a more credible economy. And among one of the most touchy areas he dared was energy, and the need for the country to move towards #cost_reflective_tariffs as a method of attracting private investments into energy sector. And then came the damning #inflation statistic of above 21% for December 2016 courtesy of CSO, principally blamed on increased energy costs…..and soon enough you had the President dithering and clearly panicking and contradicting himself yet again!!!
When Jesus told Judas…” Friend, do what you need to do, and do it quickly….” he indeed had a point. The President is sending a completely misguided message across the whole of the investment spectrum. Why is he doing this? For whom is he doing this? From an economic perspective, the damage is already done! Real prices will not come down, they never do! It is patently clear that the President and the PF are more interested in playing popularity politics than doing the right thing! The President has made a mistake and he will harm the very people he is trying to protect! There will be no good time to increase electricity tariffs, ever! So now, we have put the ball in the back of our own net; we have spiked inflation and still failed to achieve what we intended to achieve in the energy sector.
ON THE CONSTITUTION SIGNING…..
Lol Why Heroes Stadium? Hehehehehe Honestly, why? What for? Who is he doing this for? How much will this process at Heroes cost taxpayers? Could he not have signed the thing at State House,at no cost to the people? And these “Representatives from all the Ten provinces…..” he has invited, who is paying for them again?
I am in such total shock and bemusement and can’t help feeling that we are pissing our country’s future away in the name of politics….Good luck guys.
