hotLusaka’s Hot FM radio is currently operating under a deal that requires the radio station to play an important communication role for the ruling Patriotic Front and its candidate Edgar Lungu. The Zambian Intelligence News (ZIN) can exclusively reveal that the famous Lusaka based radio station was co-opted on recommendation of Edgar Lungu’s hired communication and image building experts. The deal which is revealed to have been struck through the radio station’s CEO Oscar Chavula, among others requires the radio station to smartly and systematically exclude the coverage of campaign content by opposition United Party for National Development. Under the deal, HOT FM is expected to continue rejecting requests for coverage by the UPND on the flimsy pretext of pre-scheduled programming. So far HOT FM has played a critical role in propping up Lungu and the PF in so far as radio is concerned. On Chavula’s recommendation the famed Dunula reverse PF campaign song has become the official antheme of the famous Red Hot Breakfast show hosted by the talented duo of Hope Chishala and the versatile Chinyota M’simuko. Pursuant to the deal, the UPND is expected to face more serious difficulties in accessing paid for campaign airtime on the radio station as the owners of the radio station have brought themselves into bed with the Patriotic Front. Insiders at HOT FM have however informed ZIN that there are silent protests among some members of staff who feel that the evident inclination towards supporting the PF is quite remiss and may have a bearing on the confidence of the radio stations’ audience. In clear terms, the deal struck by the Chavula’s is likely to make the radio station its status of editorial independence. An insider at HOT FM has further told ZIN that the PF favoritism being demonstrated by the radio station also speaks to the fact of the connections that the Chavulas have with important personnel at state house. Some few weaks ago the HOT FM CEO exposed his intimacy with the PF government when he supported the barbaric closure of the Postnewspaper. In a Facebook post which still appears on his timeline, Chavula is precisely quoted to have said ” Muletekanya, nobody is persecuting the Post . Bonse tulalipila umusonko. If you are experiencing difficulties talk to ZRA and ask for time to pay. It happens to everyone of us but we stay sane knowing the power vested in the tax man”. The rant from the HOT FM CEO elicited some rebuke from some of his followers who were perturbed at the nature of comment coming from a media practitioner in celebrating the misfortune of another.
