AmosZambia Police Spokesperson Esther Mwata Katongo has defended Police officers’ conduct when United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema and his Vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba were arrested and detained at Luanshya Central Police Station in the Copperbelt Province, reports Pan African Radio Journalist Hermit Hachilonde.
A number of on-line media platforms are showing images depicting Police brutality on the UPND supporters in Luanshya who had gathered at the police station to give solidarity to their father-figure Hakainde Hichilema and his Vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba.
Ms. Katongo said the behavior of police officers was because of the the unruly attitude of the UPND supporters at the time when police officers attempted to maintain order.
She explained that if a person proves to be naughty and makes the work of police officers difficult, it is imperative that some proportional force should be used to discipline such a person.
The Police Spokesperson further said no male police officer is authorized to search a female suspect who has been apprehended. One female UPND supporter in the video that has gone viral on social media has been seen being dehumanized by male cops.
Ms. Katongo expressed confidence that police officers had grounds for such severe action in Luanshya, adding that they were also expected to exhibit a firm stance when executing their duties in a disorderly environment.
“The approach by officers was due to the attitude of the suspects at the time when police officers approached them” Ms. Katongo said
